This artist book was created during a Wintersession period during my time at RISD, and is made up of different mixed materials. Made from a single sheet of paper, the book is cut into parts and folded so that it can be read page by page, or laid flat as a single sheet. The project started with hand-cut stamps inspired by sperm whales and the whaling industry, that were stamped in a layered pattern across the sheet as a whole. Then the layout of the story was transferred on top of the stamped designs, and incorporated to both compliment and enhance the pattern of the stamps. The artist book depicts the remarkable story of Rebecca Ann Johnson, a young 16 year old girl who joined a whaling ship under the guise of a boy, in order to find the lover who left her behind, and was not discovered for over 6 months while on board.
